Legislative Report May 2013

Electrical Welfare Club                       Legislative Report                         May 2013

On May 7th, the NYC Building and Construction Trades Council held its annual Workers Memorial Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. We lost 17 people in construction last year including Local Union No. 3 IBEW member Frank Avino, who was struck and killed by a drunk driver as he was putting down safety cones on the Grand Central Parkway and Tommy Intzeyiannis, cousin of Bro. Marc Deutscher. Tommy was a member of  Local
Union #20, Cement and Concrete Workers.  He was working in a Fordham University Building near Lincoln Center and fell five stories in an elevator shaft after his harness he was wearing snapped.

We the people of the United States of America need to continue to strive for better worker safety and health protections and see to it that these laws, rules, and standards are enforced every day at every job site.  We need to elect people who believe in a need for OSHA and its inspectors and vote to fund it properly. We need to elect people who believe in strong workers rights and will fight to protect those rights. We need to elect people who recognize the dangers that many of us face each day we go to work. We need to elect people who respect us and what we do.  We need to support those people.   And when they win, thanks to our support, we need to hold them accountable for their actions.

We need to be part of the process. We need to be part of the solution.
Get involved. Volunteer. Step Up!
